Vignette of Model Science Lesson
This lesson ideally takes forty-five minutes. However, depending on depth of conversations and whether or not students are accustomed to the specified IPOT routines, designated allotted times may vary. The lesson objective is for students to identify how the terms biodiversity and ecotourism relate to the country of Costa Rica. Students use their IN (Interactive Notebook) to write the lesson objective, key terms, activate prior knowledge, record new knowledge and reflect on learning. Students will also participate in IPOTs that involve them in all language domains. These IPOTs require students to participate in partner and small group discussions, record their findings from authentic readings in a graphic organizer foldable, and turn-and-talk with their small group to evaluate understanding. Students make text-to-text connections between authentic Costa Rican rainforest brochures and online resources to construct their own knowledge. To conclude the lesson, students write in the reflection section of their IN to record their evaluations of at least three Costa Rican rainforests and justify why they would want to visit those they listed.
